200 days

Tomorrow it'll be 200 days since I gave up smoking!!!

Yay me.

There were some difficult days. Like moving house. And exam time. And various other occasions that I always associate with smoking. But I'm glad I quit....will just have to see if I manage to stay off them long term.

According to the facebook app I've added 17 days to my life as well, by not smoking for 200. Well, you know - as long as I don't get hit by a bus or whatever.

There are nearly 5000 cigarettes I haven't smoked too. That's a pretty scary amount for a little over 6 months. Funny how it's that figure rather than the life saved or money saved which tends to hit home for me.

Busy week so I haven't done any writing, got a few rejections but haven't sent pieces out again...I'll get to it. Will catch up on everyone's blogs as well, haven't been reading or commenting much this week. Hope all is well with everyone & everyone's writing :-)

Facebook apps

Like most people, I get annoyed by a plethora of facebook apps cluttering up my newsfeed. In general, I just click the 'hide' button on them.

There is one I love though. It's called "How much money have I saved since I stopped smoking?".

You put in how many you smoked, how much they cost where you are, and what date you quit.

It tells you how much money you have saved, but also how many cigarettes you have skipped, and the increased life expectancy. I'm not sure what they base their statistics on for the latter, so it may be pure bullshit, but it's encouraging all the same.

It wasn't even the money that made me go "WOW?!" though. It was the amount of cigarettes. The idea that I've managed to go 148 days now without smoking, and saved nearly €700 is great. As is the 12 days added to my life expectancy. But it's the fact that 3700 cigarettes have gone unsmoked - that's the one that's left me flabbergasted.

A little scared at how quickly those 25 a day add up. Mostly though, really happy. And proud of myself.

It's an odd feeling, that. I'm not used to it. I think I like it though.

Yay for facebook apps. Also - this one just sits on my profile page, rather than cluttering up newsfeeds all the time. Win-win :-)

I still dream of smoking

Hmm...ok, this is a test post as much as anything, as I'm aiming to set it to post over the weekend when I won't be online. So...hopefully it does!

I still dream of smoking, like the title says.

I gave up almost 5 months ago now - soon as I found out about being pregnant.

In a way that made it easier - I didn't have a choice about giving up, the way I put it to myself. Harming myself is one thing, but I really didn't want to harm my child. So I quit.

Soon after quitting I started having mad dreams about smoking. One of the scariest and most vivid involved being shot at, and getting away from the shooters, then stopping for a cigarette - which I justified on the grounds of "well, I've been shot at - that's a bad enough thing to have happened to make it ok for me to smoke now".

Strange, the way the mind works. I dreamed of smoking last night as well, though nothing so frightening thankfully.

Your brain definitely plays tricks on you when you're fighting an addiction. I mean, I woke up from that dream months ago almost wishing I had been shot at, because somehow my justification logic for smoking in that situation seemed sound. Also, I think the grumpiness that comes with being off the fags is a trick of the brain too. Your brain wants you to fight with your friends and family, so you'll feel upset, and reach for that common crutch - a cigarette. You create a scenario that is plausibly upsetting enough to justify smoking again.

Manipulated by my own mind. A scary thought. Is my consciousness or subconscious self the one in control?

At least I've managed to stay off them so far. I like being healthier, I like knowing I'm not giving an as yet unborn baby a nicotine addiction, among a long list of other health benefits to not smoking while pregnant.

I think I'll always be an addict though - I'll always have the odd craving. I'll just have to fight them off one at a time.

Busy, oh so busy...

So I've been so busy lately that I've been neglecting my internet addiction! Here's an update:

I've been off the smokes since Monday 8th of March. Nearly 2 weeks! Few times I was seriously grumpy and felt like I wanted to kill everyone and cause great, menacing destruction of everything in the known universe. Feeling a little better now though. Especially the not waking up with phlegm. Phlegm is vastly overrated, especially first thing in the morning.

Had three essays to write. 3000 words each. Got most of them done. Might need to rewrite one of them as I think I lost the plot halfway through and started rambling. I am definitely prone to doing that. Rambling. Rambling is also a word for walking and I do that too...see what I mean? Hehe.

Got another story published! In brand new literary and art magazine, Oblique Quarterly. Go take a look! I've barely had a chance to look at it myself but the look of the magazine is absolutely beautiful and, well, I'm in it, so of course it's good! A story by E. J. Tett appears in there as well. Definitely worth a look!

Went for a lovely long walk on the beach today...and forgot my camera! Not like me, I'm usually the annoying person who always has a camera. But somehow I forgot it today. Pity, as the sky was blue and so was the sea. Noticed a few daffodils trying to come out as well (not on the beach, obviously - the daffodils were on the roadside), so Spring really is finally here! About time too.

Hmm, what else...been watching Lost, great that Jack isn't in half the episodes, but after a bright start where they answered a few things, not an awful lot has happened. Hopefully they pick up the pace and start to tie up all the loose ends shortly. We want answers, damnit! And they seem to be going down the biblical route, which isn't the greatest option they could have chosen. But maybe I'm biased on that.
